Women in Global Health - Launch

Friday 9 July 2021, will bring the anticipated launch of Women in Global Health Australia, an affiliated network of Women in Global Health (WGH).

The Australian network will be launched by Associate Professor Margie Danchin in conversation with Professor Fiona Stanley AC, Founding Director and Patron of the Telethon Kids Institute, reflecting on women’s leadership and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership.

Women in Global Health aims to achieve gender equality in health leadership. Women in Global Health has over 50,000 supporters in 90 countries and 25 affiliated networks, with a strong presence in low-and middle-income countries.

Joining us for the launch, Dr Roopa Dhatt, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Women in Global Health, will describe how the global organisation and its network drive change by mobilising a diverse group of emerging women health leaders, by advocating to existing global health leaders to commit to transform their own institutions and by holding these leaders accountable.

A panel will discuss how the Australian network might translate the aims of Women in Global Health to our context through a focus on:

  • Enhancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women’s leadership and participation in all decisions that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing.

  • Contributing to global gender equality initiatives through the Women in Global Health network and the World Health Organization.

  • Connecting women leaders from the Indo-Pacific region with leaders in Australia.

  • Promoting evidence-based policy to advance women’s leadership in health.

Panelists include four outstanding women leaders who have been involved in establishing Women in Global Health Australia:

  • Professor Julie Bines, Victor and Loti Smorgan Professor of Paedaitrics

  • Professor Jacinta Elston, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous), Monash University

  • Associate Professor Jaqui Hughes, Menzies School of Health Research

  • Associate Professor Jacqueline Boyle, Monash Partners

We invite all to join us for the launch Women in Global Health Australia.

The virtual launch will be held 11:30am-1:00pm AEST Friday 9 July 2021.
