Universal Health Coverage Day 2021

The pandemic has exacerbated existing health inequities and forced vulnerable populations into even more precarious positions. It’s time to balance the scales to ensure temporary setbacks do not become permanent trends. Universal health coverage is about meeting everyone’s needs, no matter who or where they are. Universal Health Coverage Day is 12 December 2021.

Universal health coverage means that all people have access to the health services they need, when and where they need them, without financial hardship. It includes the full range of essential health services, from health promotion to prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care. (WHO, 2019).

Universal Health Coverage Day is the annual rallying point for advocates to raise their voices and share the stories of the millions of people still waiting for health, call on leaders to make smarter investments in health and remind the world about the imperative of universal health coverage (UHC).

On UHC Day Women in Global Health will be calling for gender responsive UHC, join us to advocate for:

  1. Gender equality and women’s rights are central to achieving UHC

  2. Gender equity will strengthen the role of women health and care workers in design and delivery of UHC

  3. The talent and perspectives of women are critical to leadership of UHC from community to global levels

  4. Gender responsive UHC addresses the needs of women and all genders

  5. Women’s leadership is critical to the UN High Level Meeting process on UHC

  6. Gender equal UHC will drive global health security

  7. Governments must recommit to the promises made at UHC HLM 2019
